WAMPO and Contributing Partners receive T3 Support With a Complete App Overhaul

The Wichita Area Planning Organization (or WAMPO, for short) serves 22 cities and all or part of 3 counties in south central Kansas. Locally, the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO) is responsible, in cooperation with the State of Kansas and Wichita Transit, for carrying out the metropolitan transportation planning process.  WAMPO contacted WSU T3 for help with their app for three major events:

  • WAMPO Annual Bicycle & Pedestrian Count  Every year WAMPO coordinates an annual count of bicycle and pedestrian activity across 35 different sites in Park City, Goddard, Andover, Mulvane and Wichita to name a few.The data collected during the count helps to estimate the number of people and locations people bicycle, walk and run. Once collected, the data is used to plan the location of future bicycle and pedestrian investments. In order to effectively gather this information we rely on a team of volunteers to spend a short period of time at each site counting bicyclists and pedestrians. this year, the app assisted volunteers with data collection as they zoomed by!
  • Open Streets ICT  Open Streets ICT is a FREE community-building event bringing Wichitans of all ages and fitness levels together to promote healthy active living and social engagement. The app is free to all and provides event details throughout the 4 mile stretch of Wichita fun.
  • Walktober  Walktober is a free, community-wide physical activity initiative, encouraging participants to engage in the recommended 30 minutes of activity five or more days of the week.  The app assists with data collection and provides event leadership with loads of event data.

All three events were contained in one easy to use app that allowed administration to move seamlessly throughout the three events. The events had completely different demands: one event was all public, another required extensive data collection by a number of volunteers and the other required data collection on a daily basis. The app had to support high activity levels from vendors, participant attendees, volunteers and project stakeholder leadership. Working closely with the event admins provided us the info we needed to get the job done.

We are proud to be connected to such a progressive organization as they strive to make Wichita the best it can be!

Funded in part by the Knight Foundation Fund at the Wichita Community Foundation, ActiveICT supports the active transportation, wellness and civic engagement activities of the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO), Health ICT, and Wichita Parks & Recreation.
